About the Author

Irwin Weinbaum began his career as a Civil Engineer in a design office working on the Interstate Highway System. At an early stage he recognized the value of knowing how things were built in order to produce effective designs, schedules and budgets. He left to go to work for a General Contractor engaged in Public Works construction. He rightly assumed that would be the best way to get the knowledge that he lacked.

He fell in love with construction and after 30 years of managing projects of ever increasing scope and complexity he retired as a Vice President of Slattery Skanska. His career at Slattery Skanska was interrupted when he was selected to become President of a Public Development Corporation where he played a lead role in the Times Square Redevelopment and the improvements to the Times Square Subway Station. He has deep experience as a designer, contractor and owner.

From these three perspectives he has watched the knowledge gap between designer, owner and contractor grow, at a time when projects become more complex and construction skills are the very key to success. He created these classes in an attempt to close the gap by providing every member of the project team with the fundamentals of the construction process. As the team becomes more knowledgeable, contract documents will become more constructible and schedules and engineer’s estimates more realistic. Most importantly, change orders, delays and cost overruns will diminish and projects will be completed closer to their original budgets.
